What is Expect Respect?

Expect Respect is a new anti-bullying program at Case High School.  Staff and students are committed to bringing more education and awareness to our casual use of demeaning language such as swearing, racial slurs and words/phrases that put down a group of people (i.e. calling someone or something ‘gay’ or ‘retarded’).  The goal of the program is to make Case High School a professional setting that is emotionally and physically safe for teaching and learning.  As a staff we believe that improving the use of language in the building will have a positive effect on our school climate.

What are the guidelines of Expect Respect?

Staff and students are expected to follow some simple guidelines.  At Case High School:

1.  We do not use profanity
2.  We do not use language that hurts, puts down and /or harasses groups or individuals.
3.  We do not write profanity or hurtful language on school property and /or        personal belongings.

So, what’s really changed at Case?

There aren’t any new “rules” at Case High School.  Swearing and other demeaning language has never been condoned, but most would agree that the use of this type of language has become more casual.  Students and staff have become desensitized to hurtful language.  With Expect Respect comes an ongoing commitment from staff to address the language.  Students should expect that if they use inappropriate language in the classroom or in the hall, a staff member will be addressing them on it.  This may involve a gamut of responses ranging from simply talking to the student, a phone call home, or in more extreme cases, a discipline referral.

How do I get involved?

The power of this program lies with the students.  We know that attitudes and behavior of ones peers will have a much greater effect (vs. a bunch of adults telling kids what they should do).  We are always looking for positive student leaders to help in delivering the message of Expect Respect at Case. If you are a parent or student interested in becoming involved with this program, please contact Karen Coombs (green school counselor) at 619-4238 or email karen.coombs@racine.k12.wi.us .
