Model Organization of American States and Model United Nations
This simulation club is approximately 25 years old and teaches young people about the methods of negotiation, compromise, and concensus used in the international organizations which we portray at local universities in two day simulations. We begin preparations for Model O.A.S. in September with an organizational meeting to which all are welcome. Most of the participants are juniors and seniors, but the club does not preclude sophomores or freshman. The O.A.S. simulation is held at U.W. Parkside for two days in November. We take several teams of 5-10 members and alternates who represent a country of the Western Hemisphere that they have researched and know well. After the Christmas break we begin preparing for the Model U.N. simulation held at U.W. Milwaukee in March. There we portray several countries from various areas of the world and participate in side simulations such as the Security Council, Historical Security Council, Economic Union, and the International Court of Justice. This is also a two day simulation, and we spend one night in Milwaukee. Teams are smaller with no alternates allowed so the team is pared down to the experienced members who have gone to at least two previous simulations if possible. While Case has been the recipient of many prizes over the years for their portrayals of their assigned countries and the speeches presented, the learning experience of "being" from another country and viewing the world through different eyes is invaluable for students who wish to forcus on international education in their future education and careers.
